Scott Joplin’s tombstone lists his birthdate as November 24, 1868 but that is at odds with census records which place him in north east Texas in July of 1870 at the age of 2. So his exact date of birth is not known but may be in 1867 or 1868. Joplin was a ragtime composer and pianist. His music received a great deal of attention after his piece The Entertainer was featured in the 1970s movie The Sting. His most popular work was Maple Leaf Rag for which he received modest royalties throughout his lifetime. See the link below for more information.
