Quick Facts:

  • Prolific German lutenist and composer.
  • His father, younger brother, and younger sister were also lutenists.
  • Studied with Silvius Leopold Weiss.
  • After 1735 he is known to have been at the Kapelle of Count Heinrich von BrĂ¼l.
  • Visited Berlin in 1737
  • Visited J. S. Bach in Leipzig in summer of 1739 in the company of Silvius Weiss and W. F. Bach.
  • Moved to Leipzig in 1763 and performed until 1769.
  • He was in demand for his skill in accompanying recitative on the theorbo.
  • He wrote a great deal of music but little survived.
