German violinist and composer. Began study of violin with Corelli in 1696 while a choirboy at the chapel of the Margrave of Ansbach. He was a gifted young violinist. In 1709 he began his studies at the University in Leipzig. In 1712 he was appointed by the King of Poland as Kapellmeister at Dresden. As part of the suite of the hereditary prince of Saxony, he traveled to Paris (1714), Berlin (1715), Italy (1716-17), and Vienna (1718). In Italy, he studied with Vivaldi who later dedicated a concerto to him. He became Konzertmeister at the Saxon court at Dresden in 1730. From 1731 until his death he led the opera orchestra under Hasse. Pisendel was most influential as a violin virtuoso and teacher but wrote a small body of concertos and violin solos.
