On the road to Jaipur

Thursday - December 25, 1997

On Christmas morning we began our drive to Jaipur. Enroute we visited Fatehpur Sikri, the deserted, red sandstone city that was built by Emperor Akbar as his capitol and palace in the 16th century. It was only used for that purpose for a few years, however, when draught forced him to move the capitol back to Agra.

Our next stop was the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. This attraction was a little disappointing because the weather was unusually cold. Few birds were visible but the bicycle rickshaw driver was entertaining and we managed to see a few friendly monkeys.

The rest of the trip to Jaipur was uneventful but visually interesting. We passed through the countryside of Utter Pradesh and observed the locals making bricks and tending the land. Travel was slow, as it is everywhere in India, often due to the presence of large animals on the road. The trip took the entire day and we arrived in Jaipur shortly before sunset.

We arrived at the Mansingh Hotel in Jaipur and were greeted by this charming Indian version of a Christmas tree. In the lobby we saw this adorable Indian boy dancing to Indian string music played by his father. Later we had dinner in the hotel and Kathleen had her palm read by a fortune teller who was more amusing than amazing.
