Dr. Estrella earned a Ph.D. in music education from Temple University, a Master of Arts degree in music composition from Claremont Graduate School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Psychology from Eckerd College. His Ph.D. dissertation "Effects of Training and Practice on Advanced Measures of Music Audiation Scores" involved programming and administering a 26-lesson aural skills curriculum delivered on Macintosh computers using HyperCard, speech synthesis, and digital audio. On July 1, 1991 he accepted a position at Temple University as Director of Computer/Media Services. On July 1, 1999 he began a tenure-track, presidential appointment as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Computer/Media Services for Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.

Among his many duties at the Boyer College, he was the Director of the Presser Creative Music Technology Center Computer Lab and the webmaster for the college’s extensive web site at http://www.temple.edu/music. He was Vice-President and webmaster for the Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME at www.ti-me.org), a national organization dedicated to establishing standards for technology education for music educators. His current professional passion involves designing interactive web sites for music education through relational databases, Javascript, CSS, and HTML5. In July 2001, he left Temple University to work full-time in his Web development business StevenEstrella.com which creates educational media for music and the arts.
